Beginner sewing project: diy pillowcases

I got a new sewing machine:

Fabric is expensive, especially when I'm still mangling everything.  So I went to the thrift store and bought some sheets for a dollar or two a piece.  I'm using the sheets fabric to practice sewing.  Making pillowcases is helping me get new comfortable with my new sewing machine and sewing in general.  When these pillowcases start looking decent I'll use real fabric!

You will need:

  • Fabric for border: 11"x41".  I folded and pinned the fabric and cut at 20.5"
  • Fabric for pillowcase: 26"x41".  Again I folded it and cut at 20.5"
  • iron
  • pins
  • sewing machine
You have two pieces that look like this:

Unpin the border piece and fold in lengthwise so you have a long strip, 5.5"x41".  Get your iron and iron down the fold:

Unpin and unfold the pillowcase piece.  Match up the cut ends of the 41" border piece to the face-up 41" side of the pillowcase piece:

Sew the border piece on to the pillowcase piece:

Fold the fabric in half so that the correct sides of the fabric are facing each other and the border pieces line up.

Sew along the two sides:

Turn the pillowcase right side out through the opening by the border piece.
